1/1/12: I'm editing my review now that I've used these more in my class. Since I teach a state testing grade, my students have to know how to do geometry on paper and not just by using manipulatives. This product really helps me bridge that gap. I introduce the concept with these then I move on to counting edges and faces, etc on paper. When my students struggle with the paper portion of it, we go back to these and I let them hold it while counting. Then we refer back to the paper. These have been a life saver in my small groups.
I'm not sure if the product description says it, but these have small clear holes that are plugged. The little plugs fall out very easily (con), but the whole point of the holes is to use them to fill and teach volume (pro!). When I first bought these, I intended to use them only for faces, edges, vertices. Now I intend to use them to teach volume, too.
I can't say enough good about Learning Resources ans their products.
I recognize these are for kids but if I cared more about precision, I would send them back. A handful of the shapes such as the large cube, pentagonal prism, and triangular prism taper slightly by a few millimeters from end to end. The cube is just barely noticeable, but I noticed the prism's tapering when I removed it from the box and I had to measure to be sure. This is more of a visual problem when you stack certain shapes, because one end will be flush with another shape, while the other end will not be, such that the edges stick out. Additionally, the stated measurements are rounded up because several of the shapes are slightly smaller than they are supposed to be. Other shapes are just fine.
I got them for a deal so I don't mind these flaws. My use doesn't require precision and they are light and colorful, so I'm keeping them. If you care more than I do, be aware that the manufacturing is inconsistent.
These transparent and colorful shapes are a great supplement to the Learning Resources Soft Foam Geometric Shapes (LER6120) . They are also a useful manipulative to have when working on the Sylvan's Second Grade Geometry Success and Third Grade Geometry Success grades.
My second grader enjoyed matching the solid foam shapes to the transparent shapes which allowed us to have a discussion about volume and area. It was a revelation to him that triangles come in different sizes. My 4th grader likes counting the faces, edges and vertexes and double-checking her work by applying Euler's Formula (F + V = E + 2).
Dimensional products allow multidimensional exploration, fun and learning. Make geometry transparently fun by adding this product to your collection of learning materials.
Many different shapes and sizes. The bottoms come off, as do the small round flat stoppers that facilitate pouring substance into the shape, thru a small funnel. Looks like fun.
